Non-Renewal
Insurance Glossary
The termination of an insurance policy at the end of its term. This can happen when the insurance company decides not to renew the policy or when the policyholder requests non-renewal.Non-renewal can also occur when the policyholder themselves requests not to renew the policy. This is a voluntary non-renewal initiated by the insured, and it’s typically documented or marked in the policy records.
Non-renewal is the termination of an insurance policy at the end of its term
This can happen for two primary reasons:
- Insurer-Initiated Non-Renewal:
- Reasons: The insurance company decides not to renew the policy due to factors such as excessive claims, increased risk, underwriting guidelines, or business decisions.
- Notification: Insurers are usually required to provide written notice to the policyholder a certain period before the policy expiration date if they decide not to renew.
- Policyholder-Initiated Non-Renewal:
- Policyholder’s Choice: The policyholder requests non-renewal, indicating their intention not to continue the policy beyond its current term.
- Documentation: This request is typically documented or marked in the policy records.
- No Renewal Notice: Since the non-renewal is at the policyholder’s request, the insurer usually doesn’t need to provide a non-renewal notice.
Regardless of who initiates the non-renewal, the outcome is the same
- Coverage Termination: The insurance coverage ends on the policy’s expiration date.
- No Further Premiums: The policyholder is no longer obligated to pay premiums for that policy.
- Alternative Coverage: If the policyholder wants continued coverage, they need to find a new policy, either with the same insurer or a different one.
Example of Policyholder Initiated Non-Renewal
A driver decides to sell their car and no longer needs auto insurance. They contact their insurer and request non-renewal of their policy. The insurer marks the policy accordingly, and the coverage terminates at the end of the policy term.
Including both perspectives in the definition
Non-renewal is the termination of an insurance policy at the end of its term. This can happen when the insurance company decides not to renew the policy or when the policyholder requests non-renewal. In either case, the coverage ends on the expiration date, and the policyholder needs to find alternative insurance if they want continued coverage.
